This is a really good plans and builders forum. There is even RC buiding in here. You have to register to get access to the old plans and some searching. It is worth it though. It is another one of those website packages loaded with jewels and gold.

FLYING BOATS. Just about anything you want to know about seaplanes in boat form can be found here. Probably the very best site available on the internet. Reasearch Heaven. Takes time to get registered here. It is loaded but not heavily used. Do not let that stop you.

Decals- An Easy Way to Custom Make Your Own

Post by Neons »

You can even make photo decals with this technique. They are so thin there will be no seam edge showing either. Now you can make your own personal or scale decals. Read the Decals Pdf Document.

All About Panel Lines & Rivets Before the Painting

Post by Neons »

Here are some diagrhams on placing panel lines with tape and then riveting your work. Use 1/16 or 1/64 inch Chartpak tape from art stores. 2-3 thin coats of primer. Peel the tape off and sand with 400 or 320 paper. Just to smooth it out very little so you do not remove the lines. Then the rivets go on.
http://www.rcscalebuilder.com/Tutorials ... efault.htm

Here is an excellent website about what supplies are needed to do panel lines and rivets.

John Morgan is building a superb huge Stinger C-119 Boxcar. He is just starting to place panel lines and rivets here and the next pages down the line in this thread. Here you can follow his work as he finishes his finish painting also. He is a Master Builder of scratch planes.

Vacu-Forming Ideas - There are Many Types to Make

Post by Neons »

I have a home made vacuum box with a hose connector and pegboard top. It has 2 tops in a large and small for different size oblects. I got a couple ideas here to improve my v-former from this link. I like the old aluminum window frames and the clamps. I also got an idea for a better oven stand with the angled shelf brackets too. see the video in this one also.
http://www.instructables.com/id/E8RW98YF3C4XLCQ/

In this link the person made a portable oven with a hotplate and disposable aluminum trays. Can be used in an outdoor space or garage so the wife does not complain of smell. Again with aluminum screen frames and clamps.
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=621858

Here is a unique vacuformer. He uses wingnuts and bolts. I think the spring clamps would be a better idea. Note it is hinged and he warms it up over an electric stove burner and flips it over to the platen. The platen has a metal screen instead of pegboard. I like this aero motor he is building.

How about shrink wrap making a canopy with hot air. It is in German but it is a neat idea.
http://jk-modellflug.de.tl/Kabinenhauben.htm

I have seen people use water bottles that were heated over a plug also in the oven but with mixed results though.

Great stuff Bob!... started building a vacuum forming table years back and eventually gave it to a fellow modeler in our Tiverton club who finished it... he still makes all sorts of canopies, fairings, etc... for himself & other club members... cool stuff! ;)

Thanks Tom,
If it helps take any mystery out of foam it is a help. Many of us frown on the unknown. It is a great medium to work with and it can produce as good and many times a better plane than balsa. I have seen many instances of this truth. When I find another useful item to add to working with foam, I will post it here someplace.. Well onward. I have planes to build.

Electrics- Very Vital. Prop Balancing. Gain Horsepower

Post by Neons »

I will say that all the flying I have done in all types of E-powered planes there is nothing I have noticed more than a dysfuntional propellor blade that does not run true or is out of balance. This may effect nitro also but you do not hear it or maybe see it as easy. I will say if you have a noisy blade in the 6 inch and up sizes it most likely is one of the 2 problems listed here. On the lower Kv motors you should bearly hear the prop noise if it is correctly functioning. I use mostly surgical tubing for all my prop savers now. No more elastics and O rings crap. What happens on the smaller props they flip over and when you reset them to fly again you get a noticable prop sound. The blades are running off center or as I say, untrue. On the smaller blades I can carefully bend the blade back in line and sight them in with a runup loking across the blades. Once lined up the noise is gone. If you throw a plane up with an untrued blade it will usually lose up too 10% power loss. It acts like a low voltage battery. So that is one problem to look for here.

Next. Do you know how to balance a prop? Do you know how to sand it on the correct side? How about your spinners? Well, I am going to place the links here to a very good 3 part video. This is thorough in that it shows how to use the balancing stand. The person doing the demo in part#1 shows how to balance a larger prop. In part #2 he goes another step in balancing spinners and then part #3 a smaller prop for higher speeds. This will make your plane to reach maximum power with a smooth running system. You will really notice it in the payback when you fly.

RC Prop and Spinner Balancing - Part 1 - the balancing stand and a large propellor.

RC Prop and Spinner Balancing - Part 2 - Finish big prop and start spinner balancing

RC Prop and Spinner Balancing - Part 3 - Finish the spinner and then smaller higher speed prop.

I hope you get something out of it. I picked up a few more tips

Prop Savers: TheraBand..The Best

Post by Neons »

Stop using those O rings and rubber bands that drie out after a few months of non use. The TheraBand tubing is the way to go. It is common and used in excercise stretching bands. It can probably be found in sports. therapeutic, or mall stores. Why bother when you can get it on eBay for $1.45 Shipped for a foot long. That will give you up to 100 prop saving bands. That is less than $0.02 each.

Well, There are a few easy ways to cut them once you get them to your home shop.

Well now. How big a prop to use them on? By the way the motor HXT DT-750 (blue Wonder) in the demo is a - Best Bang for the Buck. $11.00 @HK
