Revisting my Timeless USCG Albatros Hu-16a Seaplane

Post by Neons »

USCG Albatros Hu-16A Thread links and Build Log Foam build.
2023 Nicolaci Water My Planes.jpg
The plane has all the bugs out from the maiden now and it flies very scale like now. It is so pretty in flight. Very realistic look flying.
Here are the links to the Albatross. This one has all the info and the start all the way to the finish. This is in the middle of this thread starting in the page 6 forward. Of course the revisit may have some items still present or not working due to posting the original Log in Dec. 2010 year.

The Very Beginning - Started in 11-2008 Making the fuselage.
It was pink foam cut from 2-2 inch thick and 1-1 inch thickness sheet foam from Home Depot. It was all roughed from home made foam cutters powered by a train transformer with adjustable power switch. I gouged the inner fuselage hollow with a curved copper house wire.

I would recommend going to the RC Groups link at the opening pages to visit the build text. I cannot repeat it all here. Just some notes along with some pictures.

Creating the floats and mounting into the wing solid. There are dowel pins to remove them with 2 screws. They are strong enough for flight. In a mishap the dowels are the weak point to break away.

Take a piece of tin and shape it with a radius. Outline the position of the plywood float base. Heat the tin and melt the foam to the thickness of the plywood. It is notched for the wing spar. Epoxy in place.

Create 1/8th inch plywood struts with dowels and a flat piece for the screws. Slot the foam and do a triial fit into the wing before epoxy. use a ruler to get them correct and by eye also. Give some angle.

The major parts of the plane are all built in the post revisit. Use the link at the beginning to find out more. I am going to show just some finish items here before closing. Get plastic parts from https://parkflyerplastics.com/cart/. I used their motors. fuel tanks, and you can find the cowls there also. Hundreds of more useful parts also. After the first year of use I cut out the nose to make an easier battery access hatch. I never got water in the plane.
