Fw190 A-6, Flown by Joachim Brendel, 3./JG51, December 1943

Post by Neons »

This is going to be an article of one of my FlyZone Focke Wulf 190's getting a make over after some hard flying and at least 6 crashes since 2018. This aircraft model is a very good flying RC craft. It has just gone thorough some bad luck with a warped wing and 2 radio glitch spiral in crashes. The fuselage was totally split behind the canopy and just ahead of the rudder. It also broke the whole cowling just in front of the canopy also in the last dive in from the transmitter blackout.

As you can see in the photo the Fw-190 was near new bought at auction in 2-2017. FlyZone made a nice looking model but with some major flaws. Weak Landing gear for one. In the second photo there are a couple wings I bought later at another RC sale. They went for give away prices. In this article I am going to be using the last wing. The original on the plane had a bad warp after its first demise. The second wing was lost in the most recent crash when the transmitter failed signal. It was broken into a dozen pieces. The final wing and fuselage repairs are the main attraction here for the Joachim Brendal paint scheme in the Eastern Russian war front in 1943.

Awarded the Knights Cross of the Iron Cross Awarded Oak Leaves to the Knights Cross

Joachim Brendel was born in April 27, 1921 in Ulrichshalben near Weimar. Brendel began his combat career in 1941 as a Leutnant and Rottenflieger with I./JG 51 on the Russian front. On only his fourth mission he scored his first victory, but had to wait until 31 March 1942 flying another 116 missions to score again. The beginning of 1943 saw a marked change in Brendels performance, by February he had 20 kills to his credit, on the July 9, 1943 he scored his 50th victory. After his 95th victory he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross and on the October 16, 1944 he achieved his 150th victory which earning him the Oak Leaves to the Knight' Cross on 14 January 1945 by this time his score stood at 156 kills. By now he had been promoted to the rank of Hauptmann and was Gruppenkommandeur of III./JG 51. His final victory came on the April 25, 1945. Joachim Brendel finished the War with 189 victories and emerged as JG 51 highest scorer on the Eastern Front, including over 90 heavily armored Ilyushin Sturmoviks. He died on July 7, 1974 in Cologne.

Here is a plastic model simulation of Joachim Brendal's aircraft that I am using to try to create a similar repaint of my FlyZone Fw-190. This will be a huge change from the usual over the counter gray paints that are so similar these days.

I went through my box of pilots and found one that would do the job. I repaired the broken canopy and panted out the cockpit. In the nose near the motor I faired in a light weight metal ring to get an improved circle in the nose. I am not worried about getting a close scale on the plane. Okay now for the painting I used Home Depot white sampler semi-gloss waterbase paint. They have a long lasting white pigment. The fuselage was all spackled and the masking tape applied. All the decals removed. In the first picture I build up the white that was greyed down for a slight off white color. The fuselage is sprayed and blow dried as I go to speed the paint process. I think I did 4 coats and it was good to go. The finish will have streaks in the white wash.

The fuselage was finished and the new wing is next after light spackling and sanding. The process was the same again as above. The top and bottom wing was painted.

After the final white coats I went into the creating the mop streaks and runs on the white. I use a mix of brush tips, edges, and plastic card to scrape some parts. I also used a piece of cloth with a couple drops of shady grey to smudge and blot for effect. Remember this. It was in 1943 winter in Russia. Do you think they had repair hangers with a compressor and spray guns/ No. It was cold so they thinned oil base paints most likely and used mops and rags to white wash the whole aircraft. It did the job and made some messy streaks. After the blotching was done I used the airbrush to shade and soften some edges of the shading.

Next was the planning for a new set of decals as shown in the first pictures that were used on Joachim Brendel's aircraft. I looked on line for similar decals and did a load of measuring to get a close fit for the plane. After some printing and adjustments with the plain paper printings I came up with a good fit. I added some other decals to fill empty space for maybe some other planes. Then I did the final printing on Laser decal paper. Laser prints with a powdered powder ink blend. It is fairly waterproof so the are better in applications. Inkjet decals can be used but I recommend sealing them with some enamel clear Krylon paint before placing in the water to apply them.

The under wing shows new crosses and the yellow tips applied. More light shading will be applied including dirt on the lower wheel covers. The fuselage engine exhaust was fogged in the fuse sides. The yellow paint applied on the nose chin an the fuselage waist. All finish finals done and then all the new decals applied. Shaping up.

The finish light seal spray of clear waterbase semi gloss will get applied. Then there was a weeks wait for some snow on Christmas eve day for some outdoor pictures.

And now the final showing of my repaired and new paint for next years new life of a battered plane. You may see some curious specks on the plane and on the crosses. It was snowing at the time of the pictures outdoors.
